The world renowned Walter Reed Army Medical Center has relocated to the facilities in Bethesda, Maryland formerly occupied by the Naval National Medical Center (NNMC).

The Walter Reed AMC was formerly located in a Washington residential area near the Maryland-D.C. boundary and about 15 miles north of the heart Washington, D.C. Visitors and residents are impressed by its grounds and structure, with brick Georgian architecture set off by wide lawns and gardens.

Housing, to rent or buy, is expensive in the Washington metro area. Families receive support from the Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program and other family and individual services, such as a welcome program, job/career planning, and special health and emotional or educational needs. The Washington area incorporates a number of bases and provides unlimited recreational and social activities. Some of the immediate offerings at Walter Reed include the NCO Club, Officers Club, Outdoor Recreation-Adventure rentals, Sports & Fitness Center, Arts & Crafts Shop, Enlisted Wives Club and more. Free recreation locations abound, such as Rock Creek Park, the popular Hains Point/East Potomac Park with a perfect waterfront view, the Spirit of Washington boat tour and the Washington Harbor complex at the base of historic Georgetown.

The metro area offers 146 elementary and secondary schools, formed into decentralized clusters that encourage parental participation. Few areas offer such a wealth of military, cultural and recreational opportunities as the nation's capital.
