Though the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the nation's newest service academy, its staff, cadets, and graduates consider it the best. Created by President Eisenhower in 1954, the Academy seeks to turn young men and women into the leaders of tomorrow through tests of moral principles, leadership and academics. Its alumni serve their country through military service all over the world.

The academy's mission is to inspire and develop outstanding young men and women to become Air Force officers with knowledge, character and discipline motivated to lead the world's greatest aerospace force in service to the nation.

The Department of Defense runs two elementary schools and one secondary school on base. The Colorado Springs school district runs the other schools in the area. Health care is provided by the 55-bed U.S. Air Force Academy Hospital, which requires appointments. Recreation and fun are found at the fitness center, bowling, golf course, library, picnic areas, stables and tennis courts.
