Installation Info: Zip Code: 93944, Area Code: 831, DSN: 878

The Presidio of Monterey hosts one major unit -- the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, which is the Defense Department's primary foreign language teaching and resource network. The Army and Air Force also post minor units, with Navy and Marine detachments.

More than two centuries old, the fort was redesignated the Army Language School in 1947 and then centralized to the DLIFLC in 1976. Besides training military linguists, the Presidio also concentrates on creating a highly livable community for military personnel and their families. Recreational activities include movie theaters, fitness centers, an outdoor recreation center and more. Housing includes officer-family units and enlisted-family units in addition to temporary lodging. A childcare center is available, along with base-run elementary and secondary schools. Health care is provided by the Army Health Clinic, with a community hospital offering extensive medical care in Monterey.

Situated next to beautiful Monterey Bay on California's Central Coast, the mild climate with rare rainfall and access to the surrounding lush California Valley help make the Presidio of Monterey a very attractive destination for military individuals and family.
