Earle Naval Weapons Station plays an important role in the fleet's operational and infrastructure support of Combat Logistic Force activities. Earle NWS is situated on 11,000 acres, with 90 percent "mainside" and the remainder on the waterfront near Leonardo, N.J. Earle NWS was named after Rear Adm. Ralph Earle, the chief of the Bureau of Ordnance during World War I. Earle NWS has been an integral part of ordnance activities for the military since first commissioned in December 1943. Thousands of tons of ammunition are loaded and offloaded annually at the six deepwater berths on a 2.9-mile pier at Sandy Hook Point.
Commissaries are available in Fort Monmouth and Fort Dix.
A tour at Earle NWS offers an opportunity to experience a diverse cultural, commercial and recreational environment. Near Colts Neck, the base is about an hour's drive south of New York City and a 90-minute drive to Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J. The facility is in the heart of New Jersey's horse country and surrounded by apple and peach orchards.
