New London Naval Submarine Base was established in 1868 as the Navy's first submarine base. The state of Connecticut gave the Navy the land in Groton, Conn., on which the submarine base is built. It was not until 1872 that the first two brick buildings were built, along with a T-shape pier. It was on Oct. 13, 1915, that one sub tender and four submarines occupied New London Naval Submarine Base. It was officially declared a submarine base in 1916. At the end of WWI, the sub base was used primarily as a training center.

Today, the base covers more than 500 acres. The base has a Primary Care Center, which offers a variety of services to active-duty family members. The dental branch Clinic is also on base but limits it services to active duty and retired personnel.

New London Naval Submarine Station offers many recreational activities, sure to please everyone. From walking in Bluff Point State Park to biking in Haley Farm, there is always something to explore. Groton offers water sports in the summer months when temperatures reach 80 to 90 degrees. During winter months skiing is popular. The snow season generally runs from January to March, with temperatures usually in the 20s or 30s. If you enjoy golfing, Norwich Golf Course was ranked in the Top 10 list of Connecticut's best courses. If relaxing alongside sandy shores and rolling waves is for you, then the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean are only 45 minutes from the base.
