Mayport Naval Station, 15 miles east of Jacksonville, Fla., in the city of Atlantic Beach, is one of the fastest-growing naval bases along the Eastern Seaboard. Nestled between the mouth of the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean, Mayport offers the conveniences of big-city living with a small-town atmosphere. Commissioned in 1942, the 29-foot dredged basin was used by rescue boats, patrol craft and Jeep carriers. By 1943, a landing field and fueling submarine facility were built and it was reclassified as a Naval Sea Frontier Base. Decommissioned at the end of WWII, it was recommissioned in 1948 to serve as an advanced staging area during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Since then its home-based ships have served in operations off the coasts of Lebanon, Grenada, Iraq and Vietnam.

Mirroring Mayport's growth, Jacksonville has become one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, with a metro-area population that recently topped 1 million. One reason is the addition of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League.

Medical and childcare facilities are available on base. The base also offers many recreational facilities, such as a bowling center, library and auto hobby shop. For the true sportsman, it offers an 18-hole golf course, fishing, tennis and camping. Adjacent to the base is Katherine-Abby Hanna Park, a 450-acre park popular for hiking, bike riding, camping or relaxing along the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Only a few miles off the base is a large commissary, Navy Exchange and many other specialty shops.
