Ever watch the Thunderbirds split the sky? Ever see them come within inches of touching wings in games of chicken while flying several hundred miles an hour just above the treetops? The Air Force's high-speed, super-high anxiety jet demonstration team is based at Nellis Air Force Base, along with Red Flag, a realistic combat training exercise that involves the air forces of the United States and its allies on its ranges eight miles northeast of Las Vegas.

The base's mission is to manage advanced aircrew training and conduct most of the Air Force's fighter/bomber operational tests and evaluations. Its range is the largest in the United States.

Health care is provided by the 114-bed Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital, which is under the Tricare System, For recreation, Nellis has pools; bowling; golf; gyms; park; ball fields; officers club; NCO club; theater; rod and gun club; youth, auto, sports and fitness centers; Fam-Camp/equestrian center; and hobby shop. Las Vegas, one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation, is in Clark County, which has more than 1 million people. Las Vegas, of course, offers much more than casino gambling. In daytime, there are many golf courses, nearby mountains, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the awesome Hoover Dam, the second-tallest manmade dam in the U.S. At night, there are top acts in the numerous nightclubs, plus a variety of inexpensive buffet dinners.
