NB Ventura County - Point Mugu FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 93042, Area Code: 805, DSN: 351

On Oct. 11, 2000 the commands of Point Mugu and Port Hueneme merged into one command making Point Mugu the provider of aviation support. NBVC Point Mugu is located about 65 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, on the Oxnard Plain.

Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme/Point Mugu offers a 6.5 mile south-facing beach, of which Point Mugu covers 4,490 acres of land, with more than half being a natural saltwater marsh wetland. This setting coupled with great year round weather conditions provides an excellent location for enjoying bird watching or viewing marine mammals in their natural setting.

The unique coastal location offers an isolated area, which encompasses 36,000 square-mile fully instrumented and integrated sea test range for test and evaluation of weapons and aircraft systems. San Nicolas Island 60 miles offshore further extends this coverage and provides an airfield for launching full-scale target drone aircraft and an emergency divert aircraft operating on the range.

There are several recreation activities available on base, such as bowling, tennis, swimming and batting cages. There is a small private beach on base for residents and employees only. Also included are beach campsites, an RV park and a beach motel. Attractions throughout the area include Point Mugu State Park, only 10 minutes from the base. Emma Wood Beach County Park and Los Padres National Forest are within driving distance. Popular local activities include camping, hiking, biking and relaxing along the shore of the Pacific Ocean.
