Millions of years ago huge glaciers waged a war with the stubborn Earth. For hundreds of thousands of years, the Earth obstinately refused to give ground and the glaciers had to take and carve for themselves what they could, scraping harsh and deep scars in the ground. The area surrounding Naval Station Kitsap - Bangor in Washington, on the Puget Sound across from Seattle, is the result of ice battering earth. On the Kitsap Peninsula, Bangor is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The base covers nearly 7,000 acres of untouched forestland and hosts more than 54 tenant commands, most of which support the Trident Submarine program. Bangor's mission is to support the Trident ballistic missile system, provide logistics support to other facilities in the area, and maintain and operate facilities for administration and personnel support. Those facilities include base security, berthing and recreational services.

Naval Base Kistsap - Bangor is under the purview of the Central Kitsap School District in Silverdale.

Health care on base is provided by branch medical and dental clinics, which are under the Tricare System. Care not provided by the base clinic can be found at the Naval Hospital Bremerton (eight miles away) and Harrison Hospital in Bremerton (12 miles). For recreation, Bangor has a gym; softball and soccer fields; theater; bowling; fishing; beaches; boat ramp and rentals; and fitness, aquatic and sports centers.
