Naval Hospital Beaufort FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 29902, Area Code: 843, DSN: 335

Beaufort Naval Hospital is about halfway between Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., in South Carolina's Low Country. Beaufort Naval Hospital was constructed on the remains of Fort Frederick, a British base built in 1735. A designated historical monument, Fort Frederick was built to protect the area from the Indians and Spaniards. The modern chapter of this base began in 1947 when the 58-year-old Naval Hospital at Parris Island was closed.

This facility has the distinction of being one of only a few hospital bases that is a complete military facility. Beaufort Navy Hospital contains its own fire department, Public Works office, Navy Exchange and recreation facilities, including boating, softball fields, fishing pier, a combined hobby and automotive repair shop, and swimming pool. The Low Country also has many opportunities for recreation. Residents and travelers enjoy the boardwalk at Port Royal, Hunting Island State Park, performances at The Shed and the ruins of Sheldon Church.
