In southern Maryland, where the Patuxent River flows into Cheasapeake Bay, the Patuxent River Naval Air Station spans 8,000 acres and houses 50 tenant commands. Established to centralize widely dispersed air-testing facilities, the base has evolved over the years to become a center of excellence for research, development, testing and evaluation. The Naval Aviation Team at Patuxent River NAS includes the air station, Webster Field annex and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division. Over the past two decades, the base has added a manned flight simulator, a large aircraft anechoic chamber and facilities to test and evaluate aircraft. The Capt. Steven A. Hazelrigg Flight Test Facility, the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School academic building and Aviation Survival Training Center also occupy the base.



The Patuxent Naval Hospital offers 10 beds for inpatient care. With 8.5 miles of shoreline along Chesapeake Bay, "Pax" NAS provides opportunities for sailing, swimming, fishing and sunbathing.



Washington, D.C., is only 65 miles away and its attractions include various military museums, the many specialty institutions that comprise the Smithsonian and the traditional landmarks, such as the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials. Teams in all four major sports play in the area, including the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens of the NFL, Baltimore Orioles baseball team, Washington Wizards basketball team and the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League.
