Oceana Naval Air Station, once known as a swampy wasteland too far from Norfolk to be considered useful, is now a "Master Jet Base." The government purchased in November 1940 the land that is now Oceana NAS. Known as the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, the name was changed in 1952 to Oceana Naval Air Station. The purpose of the Naval Air Auxiliary Station was to construct a small airfield and house 32 officers and 172 enlisted personnel. Over the years, Oceana NAS has become home to some of the world's most advanced naval aircraft and also the Navy's Search and Rescue unit.
