Lemoore Naval Air Station is 40 miles south of Fresno, Ca, in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1958, construction began on Lemoore NAS, formerly named Reeves Field after Rear Adm. Joseph M. Reeves, who laid the foundation for the modern aircraft carrier strike force. It was officially commissioned July 8, 1961. Its primary mission was to support carrier fleet squadrons. After 38 years its mission remains unchanged. It also serves as master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.



There is a hospital facility on base, providing most general medical services. A dental clinic is also available near the hospital.



Local recreation activities include skiing from December through April, whitewater rafting, beaches and fishing. Within a two-hour trip from the base are several national parks, such as Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite National Park. On-base recreation activities include arts and crafts, bowling, swimming, stables and a hobby auto center.
