Home to the New Orleans Aviation Training Division, the New Orleans Naval Air Station carries on a mission of providing maintenance and logistics training and administrative support for personnel and tenant commands. This mission includes routinely operating P-3C aircraft in the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans.



Operations include Anti-Surface Unit Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare, intelligence work, Electronic Warfare, Counter-Narcotics and Search and Rescue. Children attend schools in Plaquemines Parish, with a Family Service Center at New Orleans NSA. The branch medical clinic serves active-duty and Reservists on drill only, with other care available at Meadowcrest Hospital in Belle Chasse.



Many on-base recreational activities are available, including: bowling; fitness center; racquetball; gym; weight room; jogging trail; numerous ball fields; golf; beach volleyball; pool; tennis courts; and an auto shop. The city's rich history began with the first French settlement in 1718 continued with the 29-day battle that Gen. Andrew Jackson led in 1814 and includes Civil War engagements. Noted for its unique cuisine and the annual Mardi Gras festival, New Orleans also fields a National Football League team that plays in the huge Superdome. Shoppers enjoy the antique galleries on Royal Street, the clothing stores and bakeries on Chartres Street, restaurants in the French Quarter and the nightlife of Bourbon Street. In the Garden District are found magnificent mansions and lush gardens that document the past of the Crescent City.
