Home of the 347th Wing, Moody Air Force Base consists of four groups: Support, Operations, Medical and Logistics. Resident aircraft include the C-130 Squadron, the 71st Rescue Squadron (HC - 130s). Fifteen support squadrons execute worldwide Combat Search and Rescue operations worldwide.



On Feb. 19, 1942, ten weeks after the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the Moody Field Advanced Pilot Training School began training Army Air Corps cadets in the Beech AT-10. The training mission ended with WWII and the base became inactive in 1947, but was reactivated four years later when the Korean conflict created a need for more Air Force pilots. The base honors U.S. Army Maj. George Putnam Moody, who was killed in 1941 while test-piloting a Beech AT-10 transitional trainer. Moody AFB lies 10 miles northeast of Valdosta, Ga. The 347th Medical Group provides personnel with health care.



In about three hours, drivers can visit Atlanta to the north or Orlando to the south.The local area offers opportunities to hunt, fish, hike and enjoy the outdoors. On base, personnel enjoy golf; pool; fishing; picnic areas; clubs; bowling; youth center; ballfields; the Grassy Pond military recreation area; fitness center; and skills development center.
