Pandas, shaved heads and beautiful beaches. That is the odd combination which might best describe San Diego, at least to Marines assigned to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot. The depot is the largest naval complex in the western world.

Besides being the boot camp for all male Marine recruits west of the Mississippi River, San Diego is the center of so many exciting things. It's home to one of the largest and finest zoos in the world, a short trip to Pacific Ocean beaches and not far from Tijuana, Mexico.

The main focus of the base is recruit training. Since World War II the base has taken on additional missions. However, the busloads of young men waiting to begin the test of Marine boot camp remain the base's most important mission, and those young Marines in dress blues are the most important product the depot can produce. Like Parris Island, most Marines seen at San Diego have the gait of someone who knows the mission they have to provide - train new Marines to understand the pride and honor of being a U.S. Marine.

San Diego's largest industries are manufacturing, tourism and the military. The San Diego area boasts many recreational activities for the entire family. Popular attractions include Bleb Park, which houses most museums, performing arts and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Sea World of San Diego is also nearby. A tour of the Surface Navy Museum in PAO Center is a learning experience for the whole family. Outdoor recreational available within the base complex include golf, swimming, tennis, camping and fishing. Within driving distance from the base is Qualcomm Stadium, home to the baseball Padres and football Chargers.

The weather is nice year-round. On your way there, be sure to pick up some sunscreen. You'll need it.
