Square in America's heartland, McConnell Air Force Base was originally planned by the city of Wichita, Kan., which started buying land for an airport in 1916 as the U.S. prepared to enter WWI. This foresight eventually attracted the Army, which established the Army Air Force Materiel Center. In 1951, the facility became McConnell Air Force Base.

The base name honors the "Flying McConnell Brothers" of Wichita, who entered the Army Air Corps together during WWII and gained fame as "three of a kind." Two of the brothers perished in plane crashes. Situated in southeast Wichita. A health-care clinic operates on base, with additional care at the VA Medical Center, Wesley Medical Center and Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita.

Recreational offerings include: golf; fitness, youth centers; bowling; theater; skills center; woodworking, craft and framing shops; auto shop; and photo lab.
