MacDill AFB FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 33621, Area Code: 813, DSN: 968

Besides housing several military commands, MacDill Air Force Base is where pilots take off to chase hurricanes. Most people would call these pilots idiots, but residents along the Eastern Seaboard appreciate their efforts, even if they often are unaware of their contribution to hurricane forecasting. From a strip of concrete on the Interbay Peninsula next to Tampa, Fla., planes are flown by military pilots as well as by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration aviators. However, the planes usually chase very different targets. The mission of the 6th Air Refueling Wing is to support combat forces and operate a world-class air base for America's premier warfighting commands.

All schools in the area, on and off-base, are run by the Hillsborough County School System. Health and dental care are available at the 6th Air Refueling Wing Hospital, which has 50 beds and provides a wide range of services. Seeking fun and exercise? MacDill has golf; a marina with boat rentals; tennis courts; pools; a camping area; and a beach.
