Since its first class of undergraduate pilot training began in 1962, Laughlin Air Force Base has pinned silver wings on more than 11,000 pilots, confirming its importance in the overall Air Force mission to further the nation's aeronautical progress.
The installation honors Jack T. Laughlin, a Del Rio, Texas, native killed in 1942 while piloting a B-17 brought down by ground fire over Java during WWII. Laughlin AFB is six miles east of Del Rio. The lone major unit is the 47th Flying Training Wing, whose proud history dates from 1947.
Children attend schools in San Felipe, run by the Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District. There is a health-care clinic on base, with additional care at Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio.
There are many recreational opportunities on base, including: fitness center; bowling; pools; community center; golf; tennis; auto and framing shops; skeet range; ball fields; marina, and running track. Laughlin is a short drive from the Mexican border and about 125 miles from San Antonio.
