One of the largest installations in the Air Force Materiel Command, Kirtland AFB occupies a wide 52,000 acres on which it employs almost 20,000 individuals. The 377th Air Base Wing is the base's host organization and functions as the Air Force's premier munitions storage and maintenance unit.

Kirtland AFB was born in 1939 in response to the war erupting in Europe. The base is named after Col. Roy Carrington Kirtland, the third-oldest military pilot in the U.S. Army at the time of his death in 1941. The Albuquerque School District runs three elementary schools on base, with off-base schools in the same district. Health care provided by the 377th Medical Group.
