With the sunny, humid and lazy weather of the Florida Panhandle, it's hard to think that one of the Air Force's top units would be next to a tourist paradise on the Gulf of Mexico. However, Hurlburt Field, three miles from Fort Walton Beach. The 16th Special Operations Wing deploys specialized airpower and delivers special operations combat power. Its responsibilities include providing direct action, unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense and counterterrorism support to unified commands. The 16th's motto: "Any Time, Any Place."

Schools in the area are run by the Okaloosa and Santa Rosa county school districts.

Health and dental care are available at the base clinic, which operates under Tricare. Other care is available at Eglin Air Force Base, 12 miles away. Want fun and exercise?
