Located just outside of Fairbanks, AK "The Golden Heart City", Fort Wainwright started as a small, cold-weather test station in to now one of the Army's largest training areas. Ft. Wainwright supports ideal training from squad-level through joint task level operations.

The base was established in 1939 when the threat of war spurred the construction of the Army Air Corps cold-weather experimental station at Fairbanks. In 1961 the post was renamed to honor Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright, who defended the Bataan Peninsula during the first few months of World War II. The Fairbanks North Star School District runs an elementary school on post and other schools off-post. Bassett Army Community Hospital handles health-care needs.

Temperatures as low as minus-45 degrees are common during winter, while it sometimes reaches 90 degrees in summer. Post recreation opportunities include: bowling, skiing, skeet, golf, hunting, fishing, outdoor rentals, auto hobby shop, arts and crafts shops, youth services, fitness center, softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming and skating.
