Fort Story FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 23459, Area Code: 757, DSN: 438

The Army's only installation conducting Logistics-Over-The-Shore, or LOTS Training, Fort Story is an Army subinstallation of Fort Eustis. Miles of sandy beaches on Cape Henry provide the perfect conditions for LOTS operations. The site is also a testing ground for new transportation equipment.

Fort Story is next to Virginia Beach along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and since 1914 has trained transportation soldiers. The War Department named the area after Gen. John Patton Story, a noted coast artilleryman of his day. Today, the fort functions as a joint facility with Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard activity. Commissary and exchange are shared with the adjoining base, while children attend public schools in Virginia Beach. The base operates a childcare center with home care. The base has a dental and medical clinic, and other care can be obtained at nearby Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

Many family and community services are offered by Fort Story, with recreational opportunities including an auto craft shop, bowling, various sports fields, tennis, beaches and water activities, gym, recreation center and community club.
