The largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River, Fort Stewart covers an astounding 279,270 acres. Field artillery, helicopter gunnery and small-arms ranges operate throughout the year, including the Hunter Army Airfield, which is the home of the U.S. Coast Guard, Savannah. In November 1940, when it was the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Training Center, the area was named for Gen. Daniel Stewart, an area native who fought during the Revolution and became one of the nation's military heroes.



Fort Stewart is 35 miles southwest of Savannah, Ga.



The Relocation Assistance Program will be ready to help with welcome packets, orientation tours and planning assistance. For families with children, the DOD operates elementary schools on post, with additional off-post public schools in Liberty County. Child care and home care services are available. Recreational opportunities are extensive with gyms, pools, auto shop, arts and crafts center, recreation center, bowling centers, golf, teen center and much more.
