Joint Base Meyer-Henderson (Fort Myer) FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 22211, Area Code: 703, DSN: 227

From its origin as a military post in the Civil War, Fort Myer today is Headquarters Command -- the largest, most diverse battalion-level command in the U.S. Army. More than 140 units and activities located in the Washington, D.C., region and throughout the world are handled by the command, which focuses on providing trained soldiers in support of garrison law enforcement.

The fort was named after Brig. Gen. Albert J. Myer, who was appointed the Army's first chief signal officer, a post he held until his death in 1880. Fort Myer is also the site of the first flight of an aircraft at a military installation, and the first military air fatality. Children attend public schools in Arlington County. Health care is provided through the base clinic and nearby Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

Youth and School Age Services is a program for youth and teens 6 to 18 years old that includes year-round activities such as before and after-school care, summer camp, youth sports, and teen and recreational activities. Other recreational activities on the base include arts and crafts, woodworking shops, racquetball, bowling, pool and tennis courts.
