Engulfed in a rich history and centrally located between the major metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Fort Meade, Maryland has grown over the years into a military and social mecca, serving every conceivable need of modern military personnel. Since 1917, when it was built for troops drafted in World War I, the base named for Civil War General George Gordon Meade has developed into a veritable metropolis of its own.

The "Towne Centre" offers every amenity, including post offices, banks, credit union, ambulatory care, day care, library, theater and more. In fact, Fort Meade boasts one of the largest recreation collectives in the country, with at least 15 different facilities, including the Gaffney Sports Arena, Murphy Field House, indoor/outdoor pools, Mullins Stadium track, the Equestrian Center and the Fort Meade Bowling Center. The base is also a short car trip from attractions such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center, the National Aquarium, the White House and major sporting events.

In addition to service diversity and recreation, Fort Meade strives for strong community ties with top schools, medical facilities and family housing authorized for all grades of military personnel. Seven public schools reside on base, with private schools in close proximity. The U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) oversees base medical needs. All combined, Fort Meade remains one of the most attractive posts of duty in the United States.
