Fort Leavenworth is home to the headquarters and many of the subordinate elements of the U.S. Army's Combined Arms Center. Among these are the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate, the Center for Army Leadership, the Center for Army Lessons Learned, and the Combat Studies Institute.

Fort Leavenworth has been described as one of the Army's key "engines of change." As such it directs the revision of Army doctrine; oversees officer, NCO and civilian education; supports the conduct of large training exercises; collects and disseminates lessons from training and ongoing contingency operations; and oversees integration of new force designs and battle command systems.

The fort is 30 miles northwest of Kansas City, and offers recreational amenities such as bowling, theater, golf, skeet range, stables, pools, arts and crafts, fitness centers and a youth center.
