When most people hear Fort Knox, gold immediately comes to mind. And while Fort Knox remains the storage center for the nation's gold reserves, the U.S. Army has developed the base into a cutting-edge technology center for enhancing war fighting capabilities. With over 40,000 Soldiers, family members and civilian employees and a variety of units, Fort Knox is known as the most multi-functional military base in the United States Army!



DOD-operated schools on base cover all grades, with five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. A large child-care center is available, while health care is provided by the Ireland Army Community Hospital.



Fort Knox is in Hardin County, Ky., on 107,000 acres around 35 miles south of Louisville. The area provides excellent hunting and fishing opportunities, with a host of other sports and recreation. There are several small towns surrounding Fort Knox, and many places of interest including the Patton Museum and the Gold Vault. The region's biggest annual event, however, is the "Run for the Roses" - the Kentucky Derby.
