Awarded as an Army Community of Excellence in 1999, Fort Hood bills itself "The Most Powerful Corps in the World," featuring the III Corps Units. Originally with a primary focus of reinforcement for NATO, Fort Hood's focus has broadened to deployment anywhere and anytime.

About 50 miles southwest of Waco and 60 miles northeast of Austin, Texas, Fort Hood honors famous Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood, regarded by history as an outstanding leader who led Hood's Texas Brigade during the Civil War.

The Killeen Independent School District runs six elementary schools and one middle school on post, with off-post schools in four surrounding counties. Five dental clinics and the 189-bed Darnall Army Community Hospital provide health care.
