The fort traces its origins back to colonial times. In 1935 the name of the installation was changed from Fort Humphrey to Fort Belvoir. It is said the name change occurred after President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the area and was informed of the post's historic past and recent excavation of Belvoir Mansion near the site.
