Fairchild AFB FAQ

Installation Info: Zip Code: 99011, Area Code: 509, DSN: 657

With more than 60 active duty and Air National Guard KC-135 aircraft assigned, Fairchild Air Force Base is in a constant state of readiness to support missions in Southwest Asia and throughout the world. In 1942, the War Department chose the Spokane, Wash., area for the base because mild weather conditions enhanced training and a mountain range deterred possible Japanese attack.

The base honors the late Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, Gen. Muir S. Fairchild, a native of Bellingham, Wash., who died while on duty in 1950. An elementary school operates on base, while older children attend classes in the local district schools. The 92nd Medical Group provides base health care.

Spokane, 12 miles to the east, offers shopping and leisure activities, cultural and historic attractions, parks and gardens, and sports and recreation. Many visitors and residents are attracted to Indian rock painting and downhill skiing. Available post activities include: bowling; skating; pool; arts and crafts, wood and auto hobby shops; a community youth center; and an outdoor adventure program.
