In addition to playing a prominent role in airpower history, Eglin Air Force Base belongs to the Air Force Materiel Command, with the Air Armament as its host unit. Originally established in 1935, the base was redesignated Eglin Field in 1937 in honor of Lt. Col. Frederick I. Eglin, U.S. Air Corps, who was killed in an aircraft crash. Six miles northeast of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and 60 miles east of Pensacola. . The Okaloosa County School District runs two elementary schools on base, with off-base schools in the same county. The Eglin Regional Hospital takes care of all health needs.
