Relocating to Dyess Air Force Base? Dyess has a community-to-base relationship like no other, evident in the hospitality of the area's people, who throw an annual West Texas Barbecue for Dyess personnel and their families.

In the center of the 22-county area called "The Big Country," Dyess is three miles southwest of Abilene, 183 miles west of Dallas and 250 miles north of San Antonio. The base honors Lt. Col. William Edwin Dyess, a native of Albany, Texas, who compiled a record of gallant service before his death at age 27 in a WWII aircraft accident. The base produces combat-ready aircrews ready to deliver global airpower to theater commanders. Children attend schools in the Abilene Independent School District. The 7th Medical Group and a 15-bed hospital provide health care.

Many base recreational opportunities are available, including: bowling; health club; auto, fitness, community and skills development centers; softball fields; tennis; golf; outdoor recreation area; stables; pools; youth center; and a library.
