Before they marched to meet Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War, the Delaware Regiment mustered on the Dover Green in Dover, Del. Not far from there, Caesar Rodney, delegate to the First Continental Congress, began his ride to Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence.

In that same historic area is the Dover Air Force Base, 90 miles south of Philadelphia.

All schools in the area are run by the local school district. The base has a clinic, appointments required, which operates under the Tricare system. Inpatient care is offered through the Bay Health Medical Center, four miles from the base.

For recreation, there are pools, a gym, fitness and youth centers, and an Air Mobility Command Museum on base. Each May, visitors have a chance to join in the observance of Dover's historical places and events, called Old Dover Days. There are celebrations, a parade and arts and crafts booths during Old Dover Days. They can also walk the historic Green and see a number of old homes, some of which date from the Revolutionary era.
