Home of the 14th Flying Training Wing, Columbus Air Force Base continues into the 21st century its mission: to train the world's best pilots, leaders and warriors.

With the re-arming of America prior to WWII, the War Department announced Columbus' selection in 1941 as the site for an Army Air Corps pilot training school. Both the New York Times and Time magazine recognized the facility for its unparalleled safety record as it established standardization boards for instrument training and flying. Children attend schools in Columbus and Lowndes counties. The base clinic provides health care, as does Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.

In Mississippi, deep cultural roots and a tradition of treating others kindly have engendered the nickname "The Friendly City." Total strangers ask how you've been getting along. Mississippi holds other pleasant surprises: Columbus is the birthplace and boyhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams; the state lists more than 600 structures on the National Register of Historic Places. The base also is about 125 miles from Birmingham, Ala. Base recreation includes: pools; golf course; bowling; tennis; track; softball; auto shop; fitness, arts and crafts, youth and community centers; officers club and enlisted lounge.
