Walking down the streets of Cape May, N.J., is literally a walk back in time. Many of the houses and buildings in the area have been restored to their original Victorian grandeur and date from the 1800s. Cape May claims to be the oldest resort community in the United States. The Cape is one of only five National Historic Landmark Cities in the U.S. The lighthouse, which still watches over the town, dates from 1859.



Five hundred active duty members of the Coast Guard and 50 civilians make up the Cape May Coast Guard Training Center on New Jersey's beautiful shores. A number of Coast Guard cutters are based there, along with the Coast Guard Group and Air Station Cape May. Cape May is the only remaining recruit training command in the U.S.

Base housing consists of 267 units and six temporary lodging units. The base also features a small commissary, a childcare facility and a health clinic. Nearby Burdette Tomlinson Hospital provides services the clinic lacks.



On base recreation includes a pool, gym, tennis courts, track, areas for good fishing and a softball field. During the summer, a ferry crosses to Lewes, Del and the nearby Pinehook National Wildlife Refuge. Atlantic City is about 50 miles to the north , AND TRENTON IS ABOUT 100 MILES TO THE WEST.
