In the heart of Oklahoma's Great Plains, Altus Air Force Base may seem isolated but could actually be the ideal post. Both the pioneer spirit and the reassuring sense of small-town comforts are what strike newcomers. Oklahoma City, the nearest big city, about 139 miles away, so those seeking a break from the scrambled life found on bases in urban areas may find it the best place to raise a family.



The primary mission of Altus Air Force Base is to provide quality training for aircrew members. The training at Altus is done in a three-phase approach: Academic, Simulator and Flying Phase. Although primarily flying training missions, Altus AFB remains ready for global engagement.



The Altus Independent School System (a local school system) runs the elementary school on base. The Altus, Duke, Blair, Navajo, Tipton and Snyder school systems run off-base schools. Health and dental care are provided by the 97th Medical Group, which operates under the Tricare System. Jackson County Memorial Hospital provides emergency and other services that the on base clinics do not. For outdoor recreation, Altus has a lot to offer: hunting, fishing, golf and boating. Also, Altus has fitness and youth centers; library; pools; tennis courts; volleyball; sandlot and rollerblade hockey league. Lake Altus, in Quartz Mountain State Park, is 17 miles to the north.
